Levels

Please note that members of the USFS, who are individual members and registered with ISI are eligible to compete in accordance with the ISI/USFSA Joint Statement of Policy. Skaters who have tested with USFS must test to the comparable ISI level as listed below. These levels are also comparable to ISU Adult levels.

Age Groups

Each event will be divided into the following age groups:

  • Young Adults 18 – 24 years
  • Class I 25 – 35 years
  • Class II 36 – 45 years
  • Class III 46 – 55 years
  • Class IV 56+ years

Depending on the number of entries in each event, some Age Groups and Skill Levels may be combined where possible and at the discretion of the Competition Director. 
 

Event Descriptions

Solo Artistic Skate
This event is open to all skaters who have passed FS1 or higher. There are no required moves. Emphasis should be placed on constructing a skating program that is a balance of creative and innovative design. Focus should be placed on strong edges, body positions, flow, music interpretation, rhythm, and choreography. Judging criteria will be artistic impression, choreography and pattern, innovative moves, music interpretation and rhythm, edges and flow, posture and carriage, duration, and general overall. No props are permitted. Any maneuvers may be performed at any level.

Program Durations*

  • Freestyle 1 - 5 1:40 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 6 - 10 2:10 minutes maximum

*There is no penalty for skating under the prescribed duration


Solo Creative Free Skate
There are no required moves, but a mark will be awarded for technical merit. Emphasis should be placed on constructing a skating program that is a complete statement by using music, costume and choreography. Creativity and innovative design should be balanced with technical ability. This event is intended to represent a balance between a typical free skate and a more creative program such as a spotlight or artistic. Focus should be placed on body positions, flow, music interpretation, rhythm, and choreography. Judging criteria will be technical merit, creativity, choreography and pattern, costume, musical interpretation and rhythm, flow, posture and carriage and duration. No props are permitted.

  • Pre Alpha – Delta 1:10 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 1 - 4 1:50 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 5 2:10 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 6 - 7 2:40 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 8 - 10 3:40 minutes maximum

Solo Spotlight
This event is open to skaters of all levels. There are no required maneuvers in Spotlight events. Emphasis is placed on the theatrical and entertainment value of the skater’s performance rather than on the technical accuracy of specific maneuvers. There is no score for technical merit. The three categories of Spotlight events include Character, Dramatic, and Light Entertainment. Judging criteria will be costume and/or prop, duration, judges appeal, music and choreography and originality.

  • Pre-Alpha – FS 3 1:10 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 4 – 5 1:40 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 6 – 10 2:10 minutes maximum

The following maneuvers may be performed:

  • Pre-Alpha through Delta FS1 and lower (incl Two Foot Spin, Half Flip, Waltz Jump)
  • Freestyle 1 through 4 FS4 and lower (incl Sit Spin, Flip, Loop)
  • Freestyle 5 through 10 Maneuvers of any level


Couples Artistic Free Skate
This event is open to skaters of all levels with two skaters performing together. Levels are based on skaters’ Freestyle test levels. There are no required moves. Emphasis should be placed on constructing a skating program that is a balance of creative and innovative design and technical ability. Focus should be placed on strong edges, body positions, flow, music interpretation, rhythm, unison and choreography. Judging criteria will be artistic impression, choreography and pattern, innovative moves, music interpretation and rhythm, edges and flow, posture and carriage, duration, unison and technical merit. No props are permitted.

  • Pre-Alpha - FS 4 2:10 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 5 2:40 minutes maximum
  • Freestyle 6 – 10 3:40 minutes maximum

Ice Dancing (Partnered and Solo)
Skaters must compete at their highest completed ISI Dance Test level that is registered with ISI. Both partners must pass tests to the same level as entered. The age grouping for ice dancers will be determined by the age of the older skater. Dance 1 and 2 each has a mandatory pattern. The dances for other levels will be announced just prior to the competition. For the traditional dances, no more than seven introductory steps may be used before the dance begins. Judging criteria will be correctness, interpretation, pattern, position, posture, timing and unison. Music for the ice dancing events will be supplied by IGFSU.

Free Dance
Dance teams will enter at their registered ISI Free Dance Level and their program should express the skaters’ own inspirational and artistic capabilities. Judging criteria will be correctness, duration, interpretation, pattern, position, posture, timing and unison.

  • Free Dance 3 1:40 minutes maximum
  • Free Dance 4 –5 2:10 minutes maximum
  • Free Dance 6 2:40 minutes maximum

  • Free Dance 8 3:40 minutes maximum
  • Free Dance 9 4:10 minutes maximum
  • Free Dance 10 4:40 minutes maximum

Production Team
An 8 to 32 member ensemble performance of a creative, artistic work marked by extreme freedom of style, structure and costumes to illustrate a theme, mood or statement. Any and all types of skating maneuvers are permitted including jumps and spins. Props are allowed. All participants must wear ice skates. All ages and levels can be combined within one team. All teams will compete in one category/level. Judging criteria will be costume and/or prop, duration, judges appeal, music and choreography, and originality.
