ILGA conference marred by anti-gay violence
A conference of more than 200 LGBT rights activists in Vilnius was disrupted Friday, October 26, 2007, when a smoke bomb was tossed into a reception at a local gay bar in the Lithuanian capitol.
The anti-gay attackers later beat one bystander as he tried to escape from the scene in a waiting automobile, according to eyewitnesses. No one was arrested.
“It was unbelievable,” said conference attendee Michael Stensgaard, Culture and Conference Director for the World Outgames 2009. “That we cannot consider ourselves safe in an EU country shows just how necessary and important it is that we continue working to promote LGBT human rights all over the world.”
The International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) sponsored the conference in Vilnius.
