In the wonderful land of Out

Among the best things about the World Outgames 2009 is being out

Being able to just be without worrying about what someone else will think – or even worse, do – just because you’re you.

Fortunately for many of us, we don’t need an occasion like World Outgames 2009 to be out.

For the more than 18 years I’ve lived in Denmark, I’ve rarely experienced bad vibes about me just being me. Not at work, not on the playing field, not in my partner’s family.

Of course no place is perfect. Still we are all feeling pretty good in Copenhagen. Recently an apprentice baker here was awarded a nice cash settlement. He won it in a sexual discrimination against his employer. He was the first to win a sexual harassment suit based on orientation rather than gender.

Things can always be better. Come out with us next summer in Copenhagen. Let’s show them how.

Money, tickets, passport: Next stop Copenhagen

The first Asia Pacific Outgames hit it big in Melbourne, Australia. More than 1600 participants from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America registered to participate, and thousands more were involved as visitors, spectators and guests.

"The Melbourne Asia Pacific Outgames was a resounding success by any measure, exceeding all expectations," said GLISA co-president Wessel van Kampen.

"It shows once again the strength of the Outgames brand in bringing together the LGBT community with a mix of sports, cultural and conference activities," said van Kampen.

Copenhagen is the next stop for the brand with the World Outgames from 25 July to 2 August 2009.

More than 8,000 participants are expected in the Danish Capitol where 38 sports disciplines along with a wide variety of cultural activities and a human rights conference are on the program.

“Country and Western is hugely popular. We are sure it will be a hit with both participants and spectators at World Outgames,” said Tommy Kristoffersen.

The Country and Western tournament is being organized in cooperation with The International Association of Gay/Lesbian Country Western Dance Clubs.
